As one of the best seafood restaurants in Salem, NH, our family at Shaking Seafood is often asked a common question. What is the difference between clams and mussels? Sure, you can consume both. Yes, the shell is a bit different. So, what really is the difference?
Here is a closer look.
LET’S TALK SHELLS.
One of the most apparent differences between a clam and a mussel is the shell. Edible clams (no, not all clams are safe to eat) generally have a white or lightly hued surface, whereas mussels are darker in appearance. However, unlike the clam that consists of a light color, mussels can range from green to blue and even black. Further, clams tend to be shorter and more round than a mussel which is longer and thinner in width.
OF COURSE, IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT APPEARANCE.
While some of us choose what we eat and what we don’t by appearance, it is generally about the taste. With clams and mussels, selecting which is preferred is definitely about taste.
Another main difference between the two is preparation. While both can (and should be) cooked, clams can also be eaten raw like the oyster. However, steamed or cooked in wine is generally the preferred method of cooking for both. No matter how you prepare, the taste of a clam will be more distinct than that of a mussel. Typically, clams are the more fishy and salty out of the two.
