What is Clam Chowder?
Unless you have been living at the bottom of the ocean, you probably know what clam chowder is. However, we are going to tell you what it is anyways. Clam Chowder is a soup or stew of seafood; however, it is normally clam or fish. While New England clam chowder is the most popular, it’s not the only variation. There are several other variations, such as Manhattan, Delaware, Minorcan, and much more.
The Origin of Chowder.
There are a couple of different places where people think that the word “chowder” actually came from. Two of the main origins for the word is the French word “chaudiere,” meaning cauldron, or the English word “jowter,” meaning fish peddler.
The Creation
It is believed that New England-style clam chowder was made by either France, Nova Scotia, or Britain around the 1700s. The soup gained popularity quickly through the years and made its appearance in Ye Olde Union Oyster House in Boston by 1836. In addition to the dish’s popularity, it is even mentioned in Herman Melville’s Moby Dick.
